When I Was Young by M. E. Gaines

When I was young I used to walk
down tree-lined streets…
paved with golden leaves of fall
…that danced wildly in the wind.

Closing my eyes I can still see
the porch swings…one after another
gently rocking back and forth
…with invisible patrons enjoying the ride.

All at once I feel young again…
back in a world that I loved…and loved me
reaching every day for all I could experience
…and hold onto for the moment.

Time had no real existence…
spending an entire day afoot…
until my growling stomach said
…it’s time to go home.
